What do You Need to Know about Hunger in India?

India had already been suffering from chronic and widespread hunger even before the pandemic.

A 2015/2016 national survey showed that 59% of children over five years of age were anemic, as well 53% of women.

More than 38% had atrophies and about 20% were emaciated – both indicators of chronic malnutrition.

The pandemic only made the situation, that had already been horrible, worse.

At least 189 million Indians suffered from severe hunger in the last year (data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations).

It is believed that this number is around 230 million after the second wave.

2️⃣ Indians had two national lockdowns (the first in March 2020 and the second in April this year).

Families that have not been directly affected by the virus suffer a lot too, as they no longer have the means to support themselves.

The current unemployment rate is still 36%.
